When an individual has lots of debt, it feels bad because we imagine the worst case scenario of some collector knocking on the door with a bat.
The vast majority of national debt is owed to domestic investors and institutions. They aren't going to knock on the white house door with a bat. The negative economic consequences always have been and will continue to be handled by various mundane financial policies.
Smaller countries are different. But US national debt concerns are definitely a meme imo

Pretty sure this isn't like a loan situation where anyone is interested in paying back or making progress or whatever. They buy US debt to keep the dollar strong. Japan does the same thing and they own more US debt than China.
I feel like some people imagine that it gives China the ability to knock on the door with a bat, which isn't really the case, but even if it was that isn't what they are buying US debt for. Foreign economies need to keep the value of USD and their own currency in a certain balance, and buying US debt is a part of that.
