I feel like you can ascribe high violence to "crabs in a bucket", and high crime rate to the fact that these guys are just trying to make paper where there are few options. And arrests/incarceration rates related to the police trying to crack down on these things, and giving harsher punishments to black people, because you know racism

They also usually have a lot more opportunity and don't really need to turn to things that lead to that
I had plenty of friends, some I still regularly talk to, a majority of them are not doing well right now and I would not say any of them have struggled with systemic racism

im perhaps biased because I've been in Chicago for a while but gentrification, housing, lack of transpo around that, and the general risk you'd experience from living there and not being gang-affiliated is horrible. Maybe it's not so bad elsewhere but I doubt gentrification and lack of opportunity is specific to here
