not sure in a concrete sense but the nepotism bred from suppressing opposition tends to eventually lead to truly incompetent people in positions of power. and if there is no alternative for people to express their displeasure it tends to lead to violence that if nothing else weakens the state and it's image. the US' true power has always been it's soft power of ideas and self expression imo. not that having a big ass stick hurts power projection
