The Gift Swap is now open, starting with @Nyte.

Rules (and gifts) are at the top. You don't have to read them if you already know how Yankee Swap works.

Gift Swap

On Day 1, before normal play begins, there will be a Yankee Swap (White Elephant).

• There are 10 wrapped presents under the tree.
• All players are given a random order.
• When it is your turn, you may either:
  • Open a new present from under the tree, or
  • Steal an already-opened present from another player.
• If your present is stolen, you immediately choose a new unopened present from under the tree.
• This continues until all players have a present.

Presents grant abilities or effects. Most are one-shot.

At any point during the game, a player may give their present to another player by tagging the host in a legal game chat.

Player order is in the list above, which was already randomized. Nyte will go first and we'll proceed down the list. If you don't go up to take your gift in a reasonable time, I may post a warning in the thread and then eventually just random select one for you to not stall the game out.

One important rule of Yankee Swap: #1 goes first and last. Meaning: #1 will open a gift from under the tree at the start, but she has nothing to choose to steal. When the whole opening is all done, she gets to go again and steal any item from anyone, swapping her item with theirs (or she can choose to just keep what she has).

To take a gift, @ the host and say what you're up to.

Example messages:

@big_ass, I take the red-and-honky package from under the tree.

@big_ass, I steal @SOPHIE's package.

I'll announce what's opened and stuff like that

You can also ask to inspect a gift, if you want to stall out the game for longer waiting for me to respond.

You can wait for my announcements of what's going on or just act. You can also act out of turn - if you @ the host, it's an official action. It's not actually good in Yankee Swap to go earlier than your turn, you're basically handicapping yourself - but if you do, it will be counted. Please don't @ me with bogus actions (like trying to steal after you already had your turn) - I will get confused.

No steal limit

This sort of thing depends on whose rules you're playing. Every family is a little different

My family rules: No steal limit. #1 goes first and last. You either pick from the tree or steal, but once you open something, that's your pick (some families do: You open something, then decide if you want to keep it or swap it with someone else)

I will personally not be stealing anyones present. That's not nice.

Another rule that people sometimes have (but we don't have in this game) is that when yours gets stolen, you can steal from someone else. That's where you typically get a steal limit.

In this one, gifts can be stolen as many times as you want, but if yours gets stolen you go directly to take something from the tree. So effectively, the steal limit is something like 11
