I never really ran into this issue but I only played online, but you sound completely right.
My biggest "beef" with new cars is the Disgusting Line they added between card text and flavor text, like on that rhino druid.

tbf with paper magic and especially prereleases most people are kind (or not sweaty) enough to let you take your attack back. everyone's been there especially when the cards are brand new
and yea the line before flavor text is hideous. as are most of the promo arts but some people eat that shit up like foils

I much more enjoy low power limited sets: core sets, AFR. I enjoy two color decks with a nice curve, bears/pikers, combat tricks. There is no problem with "we stuck keywords on this card for balancing" there.
what are your thoughts on brokers being busted in snc? w/u w/g being the deepest colors and shield tokens make blocking very difficult for slower decks
