We're the ones gossiping and shouldn't be when we just see high level things and assume whatever we want from them when there could be any number of reasons and not necessarily a regression, even if the person youre talking about has shown regressive tendencies

It's a comedy at this point - I can't do much to change it, but I will observe from the outside along with our other friends. We were maybe able to stop this earlier, but he has chosen to go way deeper beyond our reach.
As I have always said, I will only want the best for him in the long run, and that won't change.

I don't disagree or look down upon that because Id definitely do the same with the people care about. Just talking about them here seems specifically nonconducive. If you want things to go poorly then to suggest they will and kinda gaslight them into responding will probably do that
