i think what you missed is the idea of controlling a discussion (or debate)
meaning, controlling its attention or deference. you dont' have to be right to make people think you are. you dont' have to be right or fair to make people listen and yield. you don't even have to make people think you're right to affect yielding. people yield to what is seen as power on a social/subconscious level.
