When you say it out loud it sounds degrading but when you say it to yourself and it makes you stop the negative thought pattern it's not degrading. Better then drinking 7L of wine in 3 days. That's far more degrading
I'm quite introspective but I don't find joy in helping others because I analyze others too, I analyze people more than they have ever analyzed themselves from the car they drive the way they behave, and the assumptions they make, it allows me to make assumptions about them which are sometimes true and sometimes not but it's just a habitual way I think.
Anyway, what irritates me about charity is helping people I don't think deserve it, I absolutely do believe there are people who are more deserving of help than others but it's not a popular and therefore incompatible school of thought.
If you have so much negative energy in your heart, it will poison any joy you get from helping others because your negative thoughts will taint your views on the ones you help just like it poisons the image you have of yourself.
