The point is that we aren't predicting with 100% certainty where the crash is but if we do know 1 event can wipe us out we protect against that event
For example people in traditional stocks will invest in the US market and then invest in emerging markets/non-US currency countries in order to protect themselves from the potential risk of US market crashing
Not because they believe the US stock market will crash. They know it most likely will outperform EM. But their goal is survival and if they do this and something bad does happen, it lets them survive
