I actually think that the opposite will work.
It's well-established by this point that this is a non-racist position. It's about tech CEOs wanting to pay lower wages to imported non-American slave labor. (And, racistly, just like the cultural costs of the south importing cheap African labor until 1865 were paid by subsequent generations many times over, these tech CEOs are externalizing the cultural costs on society and on future generations. However - this bit only muddies the water because we are aiming to make the argument without its racial/cultural elements.)
The point is arguing from the perspective that it is bad for Americans (essentially the equivalent of busting unions with imported scabs) and getting called racist, you expose the pro-H1B side as dishonest race baiters. Musk came out of this looking terrible because his opponents said "This isn't good for American labor, actually" and he pulled out the 6-yr-outdated stale "You're RACIST!!" woke arguments.
Trump was the one who originally made this line of argument accessible to the mainstream (by reclaiming the voice of the white midwestern low-middle class). Even if he strays from it, it has become core to the MAGA movement. The MAGA movement will simply move beyond Trump. Nobody likes Elon and aligning himself with the guy will turn Trump's base against him.
