gamergate was funny but the internet was way different back then, you could call people fa ggots for example, and not get banned
it started with some nonsense like some chick was having sex with video game reviewers and they were giving her dogshit ass games favorable reviews, really it just evolved into the same conversation we are having today about cancel culture and calling people slurs on the internet without getting banned, SJW was coined because of gamergate. basically just a push back against the liberal/jew agenda
it was like the spanish civil war, a proxy war for the upcoming cultural wars.

I was going to say exactly that, gamergate was a test run for what happened in the broader media ecosystem just a few years later
The initial issue was that games journalism worked hand in hand with games publishers/developers, meaning it wasn't really "journalism" as such but more like advertisement/propaganda
This quickly morphed into a counter argument which was basically: Look at all these weird losers criticizing me. I'm a woman in the games industry, everybody who thinks it's wrong that I got glowing reviews of my shit game published in "games journals" by sleeping with their authors is an incel.
Both of those things were true. The media situation was incestuous and there are plenty of misogynists/edgy teenagers in the gaming world.
Couple years later we have the same thing on a national scale - one side saying national media is essentially a propaganda mouthpiece for the US govt/neoliberal interests, the other side saying: Well you're a bunch of incels. And now we have Trump and all of that is still true.
