I don't think the messaging is really all that aligned other than both referring to it as a border crisis and talking about funding border security
That is far less significant than the difference between messaging that still supports paths to legal residency and citizenship vs messaging that promises a 20 million people deportation program.
Easier to accept the premise and identify clear differences than to refute the premise

The most recent messaging on the issue is completely aligned at this point in the election cycle, they think it will win over more moderate republican votes. That isn't the point. The point is Trump has nothing to offer anybody, he's a one trick pony and now more competent people are trying to get that work done. Unless you make hundreds of thousands of dollars and exclusively care about your taxes, I guess. He has exactly three concrete positions outlined: Immigration, tax structure, tariffs. That's it. The first one is a priority issue even if he loses and the other two are stupid. Anyone who says they're voting for Trump for policy (especially immigration) or economic reasons is lying.

I think republicans genuinely believe those types of policies are better for them, even if they are lower income. Boy are they wrong, but I think they believe it. Remember that people as young as me still had freshly cold war brained school teachers. I had a history teacher in high school that showed us William Buckley and regularly paced back and forth fuming over communism.

Biden successfully makes Mexico close its southern border, uses the same law as Trump to essentially ban anyone that entered illegally from recieving an asylum hearing and make them likely get deportated, all resulting in a massive reduction in border crossings to around the same level as during pre covid Trump.
