i thought i would be all in on the wotlk when it came out but honestly i enjoyed it better when i played it on a private server in 2018...

You're probably thinking of the Frostmourne realm on Warmane.
And yeah I agree, vanilla classic was way better than anything currently out because the community and social routines were not as fixed and set in stone as they are now.
People were all still learning about the game and how to optimize everything as new phases were rolled out. Raiding and gearing at a top level was prohibitive and tedious in a very unique way as well.
In addition, 40 man raiding was also uniquely enjoyable and impressive when achieving high ranking speed runs.
The game is now pretty much socially solved, especially with how servers and raids are organized. (Single faction mega-realms, GDKP china-gold prominence).
I could be biased because I was on a "High" pop server rather than a "Full" one, and on Alliance (30% of total pop or so). The main 10 or so guilds were still very active and had a strong presence, everyone still knew each other, and I was in one of the more prominent ones.
