Also consider Trump was elected by 26% of registered voters.
They're might be better turnout if people thought they had a voice or if their vote actually mattered, but when you come to realize you live in a state where the allocation of electoral votes is decided beforehand it's easy to see why people don't participate.
The electoral college is fundamentally broken and generates a body of representatives not representative of the American people.
It also doesn't help with the amount of active gerrymandering taking place to keep it that way. Covid is already being abused to open limited polling stations in geographically select locations so as to prevent certain groups from participating (like black people corraled into living in ghettos).
I feel so fortunate to live in a state where we just mail in our ballots at our leisure and don't have to contend with taking time off work to go wait in line and vote in some random ass place.
If we're to keep the current model then every state needs to adopt the electoral vote distribution models of Maine so there's finer granularity.
I also like the Belgian law forcing everyone to vote. A man I spoke to explained that people there consider it a tremendous responsibility in respect to the people who died under the thumb of fascist Germany.
it would eliminate the need for lengthy recounts when every single vote is stored in a secure ledger
I think it is the best way to transition our voting systems into a digital format without fear of them being tampered with which current voting machines are susceptible to and in doing so would provide easier access circumventing a lot of the barriers in place preventing people from easily voting
the only thing is figuring out how to verify people's idenity/citizenship and at the same time protect their anonymity, these are problems being worked on already and I think it's doable with zero knowledge proofs
seeing americans calling democrats "far left" is legit the most hilarious thing. in any other western country democrats would be considered a right wing/center right party.
the democrats aren't going to do much more besides maybe reinstate the paris accords and give the epa a little more power.
nothing the democrats are doing is working on stopping or reversing climate change. there's only about a dozen senators that have even voiced support for it. i don't agree with the "purity politics" bullshit with if you're not voting dem you're hurting the environment when we both know they will do the bare minimum to appease their base and nothing more.
its one thing to actively deny that climate change is a thing and put policies in place that increase activity that increases emissions and another thing entirely to continue hedging the status quo with small incremental changes that make more money than they do fix the problem
that's good enough for me, because it's better than what trump will do
also Biden will most likely work with Merkel to pressure other countries to be better, whereas Trump is setting the example for dudes like Bolsonaro
it's more than just what their policies will be, its also the global image of your country and where you stand on climate change, cus right now its "who gives a fuck lol" under trump
as a world leader your image and how other countries perceive you matters a whole lot
that's basically my point
almost nothing is better than nothing, but it will be more than almost nothing IMO because that is what democrat voters want and they know it, if they want to win a second term they will do more than you give them credit for IMO
this is not the 2016 democrats they have really woken up to what their voters and what the young voting bloc of the future truly wants, and it's more socialist leaning policies and a hard line stance on climate change, give them time
