Are video games art? - cont. discussion from old forum.

Woah

This game is slop that game is slop. Get a fucking life virgin.

You cannot convince me that "The Shoals" from Dungeon crawl isn't one of the peak artistic achievements of Humanity, on par with renaissance Church Architecture

Malenia Blade of Miquella? High ART.

Based.bmp? Yeah it's art.

Didn't you literally say this in teamspeak?

Yeah it's true. I didn't make the "Capital A" distinction though. I do believe Malenia Blade Of Miquella is a Capital piece of A R T.

I dreamt for so long. My flesh was dull gold...and my blood, rotted. Corpse after corpse, left in my wake... As I awaited...his return....Heed my words. I am Malenia. Blade of Miquella. And I have never known defeat.

More examples of Art

This Guy FLAILING around like a lunatic and his huge swords missing you by an inch... Don't tell me you don't consider that an Artistic experience.

Pretty colors and cool badass characters are great, but you're still not seeing the point.
You can even scroll up and read my posts in this thread from 2018. Not everything you like and enjoy has to be art, and not everything that has some sort of artistic merit has to be art either.

A real art game breaks boundaries, subverts expectations, provokes deep thoughts and leaves a long lasting impression. A real "Art Game" has something to tell, gives an experience that you won't find anywhere else, uses the medium in creative and new ways that you wouldn't get with traditional media like books or movies.

This is why, like you said the other day, it's so hard to find a "AAA-Art Game" (quad A), because the vast majority of AAA titles are derivative sequels, safe releases, market trends, despite their millions of dollars spent on artists.

"Art Game" is a term you've made up for yourself and no matter how much sense it makes you just can't go around saying Elden Ring is not Art, because by and large, you are squandering the definition of Art for the sake of your own made up term.

The issue here is that no matter how many great moments are in Elden Ring, I cannot recommend it to anyone over the original Dark Souls games because the experience is so diluted with the amount of low effort and recycled gameplay, and filler portions of running around and "exploring" a giant world full of nothing, only to find a chest with an item that you can't use 90% of the time.

Be entirely honest with yourself, if a friend of yours was going to play only one game ever, would you tell them to play Elden Ring?

And again, "Great Epic Kino Moments" in Elden Ring would work just as well in a movie or some Youtube video. It's not utilizing the medium in any unique or interesting way, it's just a good game made by talented people.

"it's not in the dictionary so you can't say it"

I guess I really am the midwit.

I don't think that Elden Ring is art in the same way that I don't think Taylor Swift's latest album is art.

By definition, if we are drawing lines and trying to form rational definitions of art, we must accept both as Art - but since Art itself is not rational but subjective, I reserve the right to determine that for me, personally, Elden Ring is Not Art.
