It’s a pork project + artifact of before everyone realized SpaceX was just better. They’ve cost overrun a trillion dollars, the project is a hundred years behind schedule, and it’ll immediately get mothballed because there’s way cheaper alternatives. It’s being launched because it’s a sunk cost + there needs to be some “competition” in rocket engines of this size.
