Hereā€™s the full Richard Garfield monetization blog, which I have not read

I think itā€™s fairly dumb but I also think they are trying to do something new with this game and redditors are all mad because they donā€™t really understand it. Iā€™m going to give it a chance (not buying any packs but at least not assuming everythingā€™s just a cash grab) and see what comes of it

I think the redditors are mad because there are people who just post ā€œYour Not The target Audianceā€ and ā€œGood. I love this game because I Donā€™t Have to Grindā€ every time someone points out how something is just Not Good.

Sounds like you might be a redditor

Honestly I think they will probably add a user-made draft

Maybe with a gimmick like it exclusively uses cards from that userā€™s library

And you can only draft once to be part of that tournament. Make it like those MtG closed pack things (whatever that is called)

The problemā€™s with the way they designed draft. They are making it like arena where you just grab some random cards and then go fight other random decks or just sit on your deck for a while

It needs to be that youā€™re drafting cards from the same pool of cards as the people youā€™re going to be playing against so you can do stuff like evaluate whether you should grab a strong card that has no synergy in order to block it from getting picked up in somebody elseā€™s deck

Thatā€™s what user tournament drafts should do. You draft against the x number of people in the tournament. But I doubt it will be like this.

Imo the problem is theyā€™re trying to bring it back to paper card games, a practice that widely depended on kids getting their parents to buy overpriced packs that had an insanely low chance of being worth anything. Itā€™s just as predatory as relying on whales. I really donā€™t see the difference between this model and hearthstones lol.

They donā€™t even need to make user drafts always free you could just give everyone who owns artifact a free ticket a week and most people would be a lot happier.

But theyā€™ll never change how easy it is to get rarer cards because itā€™s extremely bad for business. The more individual cards are worth, the more money they make on each sale in their own market. Thatā€™s the main idea for them, imo. Keep the rare cards worth 30+ so Everytime someone sells on they get that nice 15%

If thatā€™s the logic weā€™re going with it can also be said there will be regular forced meta shifts to encourage regular, high volume buying/selling of low/mid cost cards as well. I think they just want you to buy shit and spend money as a general trend.

Cash grab card gaming. when they think we aint learn from yugi-oh and pokemon cards

Iā€™m hoping Valve makes no changes (except maybe removing the default heroes from packs and announcing that they will have a draft mode to run with your friends) so we can see the actual effects of this economy model before making any decisions

Reddit Rage assessments are almost universally wrong but Valve is also known to cave (especially if some dumb redditor starts a big thread proposing people Email valveā€™s offices or otherwise interfere with their business)

i think singsing does drugs tbh

We want to take a few minutes to talk about some of those missing features now:

  • There was no way to do a draft event with friends. We didnā€™t prioritize this play mode, and had planned to enable it sometime after release. Weā€™ve heard your feedback: drafting with friends is a core part of what you want to spend your time doing in Artifact. In the next Artifact beta build, you can select Call To Arms Phantom Draft in any user-created tournament.

  • There was no way to practice the draft modes without spending an event ticket. Drafting is incredibly fun, but can also be very intimidating. We agree that itā€™s important to have a way to practice before venturing into a more competitive mode. In the next Artifact beta build, everyone who has claimed their starting content will find a Casual Phantom Draft gauntlet available in the Casual Play section.

  • There was nothing to do with duplicate starter heroes. Weā€™re adding a system that allows extra, unwanted cards to be recycled into event tickets. This feature will ship before the end of the beta period.

The game is not that fun to watch. I hope itā€™ll be more fun to play.

Itā€™s probably not fun to play either but itā€™s not like games these days are very good. At least itā€™s something.
