yes Russia will throw a fit when their neighbor is attempting to enter into a military alliance that was created specifically to counter Russian influence in Europe
it is obvious
the countries will say whatever they want as justification but it’s all about creating spheres of influence in regions of the world, the west would like to establish military bases in the UA to increase influence in the region and decrease Russia’s influence
if you can’t understand why Russia would take issue with this then I don’t know
arguably putin felt entitled to ukraine either way and the nato thing is convenient justification / inflames desires that were already there
like i get the sense that yes, yns is correct about russia's practical concerns being valid rationale, but the ultimate sentiment from putin is more irrational and self-feeding
not that we'll ever know if thats the case
and not that it matters if its true
and im definitely definitely skeptical as to whether putins approach here is actually the best practical one for long term strategy but
