People who are very stupid can often present as very intelligent- as you may have noticed while browsing this site.
I’ll remind you my character is exceptionally well-read, having spent years studying the ancient Celestial Texts. He is just not very naturally smart.
Then you should have just said you read a story that had something similar to this vampire occurrence.

You think I’m wrong or you think my character is wrong? Keep in mind that my character may say or do things that I do not agree with.
Your character’s thought that this is a trap is wrong, so I guess your char saying that makes sense.

Somebody should think of a way to check dates on the letters. U can probably do investigation checks and see how old each is if we still have the other one stashed away somewhere
We should have also detected magic on the gate to see if it’s a magical thing or if someone was watching us approach. Too late now though.
