shield is a reaction spell, so you donāt need to use it here. (waste of a slot does nothing to help you). You can use it in reaction to being attacked. lasts until your next turn.
blade ward is an action spell that last for 1 round. A round in combat is 6 seconds. so you would have to stop and cast it constantly every 6 seconds on one person. By the time you can cast again it would have expired.
roll perception for books i guess or invest if u want.
