it's nice that you are comfortable with buying used cars off of Craigslist and not having any history on your expensive purchase. I don't think I would be. maybe it's because you're currently making oodles on me
I was buying cars off Craigslist when I was broke as shit because itâs the cheapest way to buy a car, dealers mark up used cars at least like 20%
If youâre not a complete idiot you can generally tell when a car has issues or not, a blockchain isnât going to tell you if someone wrecked the car and had their uncle fix the damage in his shop without making an insurance claim, or if the transmission started slipping gears and now theyâre selling it before itâs a bigger issue
Which buying from a dealership isnât going to stop you from getting a car in that condition either, dealerships are just more likely to send a car like that to auction before they put it on the sales floor
Thatâs the issue with any type of âpaperworkâ system that youâre even referring to now, if someone doesnât make an insurance claim on damages related to an accident, or they just ignore any mechanical issues arising in the car, then itâs not going to show up in a carfax or any type of report whether itâs a public ledger or not
Showing proof of ownership on a blockchain is just dumb too, we have car titles now that function probably better than a blockchain, you can say âoh well people lose paper titles and having to physically hold it is a hassleâ well people lose access to crypto currency wallets all the time now too and could you imagine having to have some type of digital token showing ownership of a car for 10 years or 15 years over the life of the car with how fast the technology moves? Now if you lost access to that key to be able to âsendâ the token of ownership it would be just essentially the same thing as losing a cars title
Basically blockchain doesnât actually do anything for the example you gave except further complicate the system we already have, all it does is change it to a completely digital system with the same flaws and probably some new flaws as well
Can you move this thread to the lounge please
What if I just wrote on the public blockchain that I fixed the car
the next checkpoint for whatever the hell confirms it, and whoever signed off on that basically loses cred for it
id be curious to know how car titles function better than a blockchain and im not arguing that wallets arent easy to lose, but that that kind of thing will be resolved in time (as we have less stupid ways of accessing crypto)
id ont disagree that its providing much upfront simplification but if you're implying that that process is simple to buy in the first place i think you're kidding me
lets say i dont know anything about cars or anyone to help me and i need to get a used car and this theoretical place that verifies the car is foolproof, they take their job seriously and are unbiased (along with whatever other bullshit checkpoints may occur, like the cars checkups previous to this)
how do i get a used car
Is the next mechanic shop going to take apart the car engine to make sure the head gasket actually got replaced correctly?
So basically youâre a woman and what happens is you just get taken advantage of and a blockchain isnât going to change that
if anything youre highlighting the very issue it could be helping solve, that none of these entities are trustworthy and that a potential way for them to be verified over time and data over a period of time about specific aspects of the car. there's a lot of bullshit ideas in crypto, i don't think a concensus system regarding foolproof verification of products we make that are meant to last from parts of to our whole lifespan is really that bad. everything else is theoretically creating more waste i think
no ideally the car has been on the blockchain for a while and previous checks have confirmed this and if things dont match theres some governing body that handles whatever beareau creatic shit is needed from there
maybe it recently blew out but that's something that that last verifying body shouldve pointed out
Iâm pointing out that you canât have the next place verify the previous places work unless theyâre specifically fixing something that the last place didnât fix correctly, but even in that situation maybe they diagnosed the issue wrong and it lead to the part they replaced becoming damaged again at no fault of their own
So there is a centralized authority? Why the fuck would you have a blockchain then instead of just giving carfax regulatory governmental authority
the whole problem as i see it can be abstracted to these guys are not working together nor are they incentivized to and a system where they might might be a whole lot better for the end consumer and this goes beyond cars
