hey buddy if >50% of germans took up arms against the nazis i dont think the nazis would have happened.
therefore <50% of germans were willing to take up arms against the nazis. and by your standards anyone who would not take up arms against the nazis (in the interest of their own welfare) are irredeemable scum right?
actually, my whole point all along is that you can bully people into believing things.
It's not easy to go against the state even if you are against something. Somewhere between 40-50% of Americans were against the Iraq invasion, obviously didn't matter in the slightest, and that's in a country where many people have the means to actually go against the state (eh, not really). Gun control in Nazi Germany was heavily biased toward Nazi party members and the military.
i agree. i dont necessarily think all or most germans were jew-hating nazis. but most of them did nothing and let it happen, out of concern for their own welfare. i think i would too, because my empathy and sense of justice is only average.
you could also consider it as a byzantine coordination problem or something where you should rise up against the regime if and only if X% of the population support it however you dont know which of your supposed revolutionaries are spies from the SS. but i think ewiz's standard is that you (i) must rise up or else i am irredeemable human scum.
And that's because the people didn't stand up to the brown shirts when they had the chance. Somehow, some of us keep standing up to those who have the fortitude to stand up to the institutions with far more power that can and do exert far more force against us. Hbotz just doesn't give a fuck about anyone but himself: his original reasoning for being a Nazi was that he "prefers order over justice"
I don't know what's worse: admitting you'd be okay with genocide out of convenience like hbotz or asoul pretending he's being progressive while being pretty explicitly racist
theres all sorts of coping mechanisms that exist like convincing yourself they deserve it, or thinking the reports must be exaggerated, or accepting the take of the local nazi newspaper.
the flesh is weak, and humans are made of flesh. you might be an angel, but most germans were not.
I think this lays out very cleanly what has happened in this thread. I also found it funny and engaging. I recommend all to read it and I will try to pull a selection of quotes without being too spammy.
i believe its more important to study why people are bystanders or are vulnerable to being bullied into tolerating atrocities instead of denouncing them as human scum. how many psychopaths does it take to commit a genocide? perhaps surprisingly few. how should we make society robust against psychopaths?
is hitler even a psychopath? how neurologically abnormal is he? how close is the average human from facism? these all seem like very important questions if youre actually trying to make society better.
some humans are more dedicated to order than to justice. why is that? can this be changed? are those people irredeemable scum? were they just born worthless?
