I mean if the question isn’t honest then they’re not really asking, are they? So the answer is honest to the question that’s really being asked. Depends how you want to look at it, tho. I tend to answer literally more often than not, so mostly I am deflective in those situations, or just change/redirect the conversation.

Not too long ago I was eating dinner at a friends house, his girlfriend made some vegan dish which consisted of a big cauliflower, some other assorted vegetables and probably the worst salsa I've tasted. I still had two servings and said it was delicious

hm, i see. but its very hard to get around it. everyone is out for themselves, so sometimes you have to make the right play, especially in a business-like situation. if you think your boss is trying to figure out if you are looking for another job, maybe you should explicitly try to mislead him one way or another depending on what youre trying to do, even up to lying to their face. actually this is kind of expected of you: its nothing personal; just business.
its really because truthfulness is a spectrum rather than a binary true/false and you can always enhance the truth in one direction or another. and people are generally out for themselves. so a flat "lying is wrong" kind of standard is either too weak to use or too impractical to use. there does of course exist a standard-- its called the law.
of course dont make a habit out of lying for no reason, that typically is not a winning strategy. im just saying there are ample situations where people can and should selectively present information to lead others to think in certain ways. and also we cant choose not to play while other humans exist.
Another example, this guy sent me a picture of his hands, asking me to comment on their size - noticing that it might be a sensitive topic for that guy, I said they looked big.
