i gave it a look through (the "learn" section) and also demoed a bunch of heroes
a bunch of them are literally like dota1 heroes, about half. the other half are different. the items i don't know how to feel about, a few things remain the same like bottle but most are changed in quite a few ways, more like they vaguely resemble dota1 items

A large chunk of the oldest hon heroes were dota ports, some had one ability tweaked or were if 2 dota heroes got slammed together. Like bara had batrider ult etc. On the item front idk if they ever fucked with orbs, dota did away with them and damage types piercing/hero/normal/composite etc but hon still had them. Hon also allowed ui modding which meant i absolutely had better hp bars and less clutter, also pretty sure there was a mod that just swapped your active orb every auto which surely is cheating lmao. But items were all essentially 1:1 copies at the start of hon, they got shifted around in patches, new items added etc etc.

idk to me it looks 1000x more approachable and genuinely fun to play than dota2
playing dota2 , to me, is stressful. im constantly worried about that something i'm forgetting, constantly being caught out by random neutral item timings, trying to keep track of just who has what is stressful. dont forget talents too.
then theres this game that actually looks FUN. and IMO its easier to show off skill in a game like hon than what dota2 has become.
better for skilled play and ironically 1000x more approachable, its almost like the old dota1 formula was lightning in a bottle and still would be today
who wants to put up the money so i can develop a stand alone game thats literally just dota1 and we become billionaires
theres a reason a fucking community custom map turned into a massive industry with TIs hosting insane prizes.
i miss those days so much. its not the same anymore. COVID killed TI imo. They missed the one, the next one after that sucked, it just hasn't been the same since. But man 2012-2019 was a good time to be into gaming. I was lucky.
You had great CS being played (with actual good betting sites), TI to look forward to each year, same for league worlds i suppose if thats your thing. you had MLGs doing regional tournaments for CoD and stuff. you had Starcraft 2 still. you had the fighting game community going strong. everything was trending up everything felt so hopeful. it felt like the industry would never stop growing. it was intoxicating. bigger and bigger prize pools, every year, every game.
Man the last 5 years have been disappointing in comparison. Sigh
i bet if you bring back dota1 today set to one of its best/most iconic patches, even something as ancient as 6.52e or 6.48b, people would still play. people would still have fun. the game was just that good.
you had things to keep track of, but just the right about. skills, items, timings, cooldowns, etc. its like with baseball having the diamond be the perfect shape. dota had the perfect pacing, the right amount of things to keep track of, just enough information to reward clever thinking, but not so much that keeping track of it all is laughably impossible.

None of that shit made sense to me back then and always seemed like a bubble to me. Like multi million dollar prize pools for video games? Who cares that much, companies were just flooding money into it as part of a marketing budget, VCs got involved in like overwatch league I think and then the money dried up when they realized this isn’t going to be the next soccer or football and only nerds care about this shit

I was playing the closed beta (my account had access for some reason without paying) and every game had some intermittent wild ass lag spikes
No my boxes are all unticked. The difference between the two is simply whether or not you are on a wifi without a password. Private is passworded wifi, public is non passworded wifi. For the most part your desktop computer never will be on a wifi without a password, so the only box that really matters (to uncheck) is private.
Basically uncheck all anyways. if you were installing HoN on a laptop it'd be more important to uncheck the public box if it was there.
client is a piece of junk, game ends without any animation or announcement. i barely could click buttons and bought 3 yasha on luna. still better than (current) dota 2.
