Everyone knows Reynad's game is a scam -- 2GD's Reborn had the same level of Artifact insanity where people are talking about "Richard Garfield" and "Lifecoach consulting at the Valve offices".

I'm sure in the quake community he basically killed arena fps but truth is I don't think most of us outside that community had high hopes for him
Nobody really expects a guy with no history of making ANY games to suddenly make a good, genre-defining game
Whereas Artifact was kinda crazy because Valve up to that point had been wildly successful at most software stuff it tried
Anyway 2gd and reynad are basically the same thing, collect a bunch of money crowdfunding off idiot adult gamer fanbase for something you can never deliver (because you don't have any skill or expertise, you spent your life on video gaming and streaming/talking about video games), take 6 years to deliver nothing because what other option do you have.
Silksong honestly belongs in this same category, crowdfunding is a failed business model.
But yea arena fps was killed by a lot of that target audience moving to team fps. Tf2 -> Overwatch -> next Deadlocked? Valve's new shooter thing will probably pull the same fanbase

It's really not comparable -- this is 2012~ when the International has completely revived DoTA2, there's immense amounts of money in the prize pool, and 2GD is tangential to that and he's basically saying we're going to do the same thing for Arena FPS. His lead developer was calling himself "FireFrog" LMAO.

I want you to imagine that it's 2012 and white people (Republicans) still ran software companies and the United States produced functional companies and ideas. Imagine if Microsoft had just bought Blizzard (idSoftware was sold to Bethesda in 2009) for the Starcraft IP, had thrown the HS stuff into the trash. Reynad, former pro-player, entrepreneur, etc. says he's going to create a new HS to save the genre. Everyone loves the idea and the game is released 10 years later.

Different environment at the time and people thought the dota international formula could be replicated (tried since then many times and failed horrendously every time, all these "esports" companies are hemorrhaging money)
But you lost me on the second post, 10 years may as well be a lifetime in the video game world, half your player/fanbase is done with video games entirely in like 2-3 years, by 5 years most of the original people interested in a game have completely moved on.
The truth is that video games are for children. At best - teenagers and unemployed young adults. These people get jobs and age out of the demographic very fast. The idea of announcing a game idea and working on it for more than 2 years is ridiculous - by 6 years you basically need to build an entirely new fan base.
In short I still believe Reynad and 2GD are both idiots. Look at what 2GD actually produced. This guy was going to create The International of Arena FPS? Yes Reynad is more obviously a failure but they both deserve scorn for basically scamming their fanbases. Incompetence is functionally the same thing as grift

By the way your idea of people "growing out" of video games is another reactionary conservative fantasy romanticizing "the work job". The truth is the average gamer demographics are actually getting older and older every year, look it up.

I had something written akin to "2GD committed a genocide" because the demographic for Arena FPS ended up missing 10 years of players as people were putting their emotional investment into a game that didn't exist, but couldn't put it together.
