I’ve found anything you’re genuinely good at the reddit for it will suck because the people in it are all idiots (problem of mass consensus mechanisms is that the masses are not experts and in some areas that really stands out)

So I’ve started assuming for things that I am not enough of an expert to see why the reddit for it sucks, that it’s probably still the case that the prevailing opinions are maximally mediocre takes even if I am not perceptive enough to see it

The Gell-Mann amnesia effect describes the phenomenon of an expert believing news articles on topics outside of their field of expertise even after acknowledging that articles written in the same publication that are within the expert's field of expertise are error-ridden and full of misunderstanding. The term was coined by author and film producer Michael Crichton. He explains the irony of the term saying it came about "because I once discussed it with Murray Gell-Mann, and by dropping a famous name I imply greater importance to myself, and to the effect, than it would otherwise have," and describes the term in his talk "Why Speculate?"[1] in which he says,

Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray's case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the "wet streets cause rain" stories. Paper's full of them. In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.

— Michael Crichton

The Gell-Mann effect is not a universal phenomenon, and some believe that there is increased distrust in news media when one notices errors in reporting.[2] Michael Crichton may even be seen as an example of this as he argues "we need to start turning away from media."[1]

saw this linked on reddit once or twice

yo my memory’s so good for having been dependent on weed for almsot 10 years of my life im proud of myself

not that i remembered the name of the effect i just knew it existed so i knew how to google to find it

are you actually dependent on weed?

not currently

but now and forever i will be some level of addict, the way alcoholics are always alcoholics even if they abstain for years

in that a trigger event may lull me back into the habit quite easily

the most recent trigger was just a casual drink, then i smoked/vaped nightly for about two weeks before stopping again

interesting. do you actually feel addicted to it? is it just psychological or also physical?

mainly psychological

there exist physical withdrawal symptoms but as far as i know theyre not as severe as the physical withdrawal symptoms for pretty much any other habit-forming drug unless youre doing it really heavily

its just if i partake one night, the next night i will have a strong sense of boredom/restlessness associated with a desire to partake again

i have no experience with something on the level of opioids or meth so idk how to compare with the ones considered “actually physically addictive”

yeah i feel you. never had that with a substance myself

someone i know has had great success with his anxiety and other things by taking magnesium supplements and ensuring maximum mineral nutrition might be worth a shot if nothing else works.

i actually already take magnesium supplements

not daily but 400mg magnesium glycinate maybe something like twice a week

from what ive read it seems like most of he benefits come from correcting some level of deficiency so i dont think i need to do the whole 400mg/day like a lot of sources suggest (and i eat pretty well overall)

my friend swears by it, i havent noticed a big difference i try to eat good but im american so my tastebuds and diet are accustomed to mcdonalds and diet soda.

meth is only psychologically addicting, opioids, benzos and alcohol are the only physically dependent drugs that are commonly abused

the physical dependence on drugs really only matters slightly in the grand scheme of things, it’s a heavy motivator to get you to commit crimes or whatever but the psychological dependence is the thing that will keep you going strong for years or keep you going back even when you’re done with the physical withdrawal symptoms and have no reason to use again. I don’t even argue with people about their drug use anymore, everyone has a justification and likes to pretend they’re just some recreational drug user but I would say a majority of “recreational” drug users have a psychological problem with it they just don’t want to admit. Not saying everyone needs treatment or AA or whatever because most people just grow out of it eventually on their own it’s just retarded to do drugs and it’s more of a problem than anyone wants to admit.

ye i was gonna say something like its really the psychological part thats the important part and “not being physically addictive” is just a rationalization stoners (and other addicts) use

lotta people r just psychologically addicted to not being sober cuz their sober life sucks for some reason or other

I remember like 8-10 years ago there was that meme that “weed isn’t addictive” and it was like a pervasive part of stoner culture and people actually believed it like a fucking scientific fact I think that shit had a lot to do with people’s attitudes towards weed and thinking it’s just some harmless plant that has medical benefits or whatever. Like let’s be real it’s there to get you fucked up so you don’t have to worry about whatever the fuck is bothering you so much to use drugs and you can easily become dependent on it like any other drug. “Oh it’s just weed” is just downplaying the negative consequences of abusing any drug and plenty of people in their teenage and early 20s have been set back years because they just smoked weed all day and barely progressed in life. Maybe people think it’s ironic coming from a drug addict but really man that shit is just bad news like any other drug

it depends on what you mean by recreational drug user

to me if you are doing it like everyday that isnt recreational anymore even if you claim not to have a problem or w/e

IAFR earnest question do you unironically believe the “oh it’s just weed it’s a harmless plant” argument is garbage for marijuana but believe basically the same thing about your DOC (acid/lsd/shrooms/whatever the current thing is)
