i really fuck with the idea of simulated pleasure/punishment as well
ie. you can make someone serve a 500 year prison sentence in an instant, you can pay for a virtual holiday/sexual experience/whatever
you can pay to live a simulated life as a roman emperor or whatever you want
you can be punished and tortured for a potentially infinite amount of time

if the goal of humanity is to infinitely expand, forever, such a technology could be used to reward good workers who contribute to the colonization of the galaxy for almost no actual material expenditure
you could potentially make an entire population of happy slaves, and use that labor to colonize an exponentially expanding number of planets and systems
you could also punish people who went against the ‘greater good’ without actually killing them, eventually converting them into happy slaves
Or we could just not do that
although according to simulation theory if we ever reach this level of technology the chance that we ourselves are already living in a simulation becomes 99.9999999%
I would sooner have extinction than have something more real than real life

I mean the single strongest and most primal desire we have is that of survival, so if you apply that to our species as a whole infinite exponential expansion seems almost inevitable assuming we don’t wipe ourselves out before reaching that capability
