Tashkent was really dope but overall I liked Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan more. Kazakh and Kyrgyz people were a bit warmer and it was generally a bit more friendly for my wife to travel there.

Did you have issues with Muslim conservatives in Uzbekistan

The mosques are very beautiful

Hotel uzbekistan looks like it was copy-pasted from Vegas (derogatory) though

this guy has been fuckin everywhjere

did not have any particular issue - just a lot more orthodox interpretation of islam. was more conservative in the eastern region and in smaller towns. tashkent felt pretty secular but even there there's a big canal that runs through the city that sort of serves as a swimming hole and there are zero women swimming in public.

uzbeks seemed to be bit more temperamental and volatile than groups in the region (like 60% of the yandex drivers seemed to fly into total road rage meltdowns). we didn't go to Tajikistan though.

That's pretty funny about the drivers. They would fit right in in Boston

I have had similar experiences traveling in muslim countries - they can have a large, beautiful beach and barely anybody swimming (and definitely not women). Women wearing a western-style bathing suit unapologetically stared at and shamed. If women need to go in the water at all they wear full-body cover "burkini"

Pretty odd article about it from France. It sounds completely insane in the US context (government is regulating what women wear!!) but based on my experience is probably actually a good law

This type of culture is extremely insidious and oppressive and you dont fully understand it unless you experience it

fucking insidious he says

"don't fully understand it unless you experience it" he says

what a world

idk i have no problem with muslim people and muslim countries self-determining and doing whatever they want. just not the places to go as a woman if u wanna wear a bathing suit in public.

it's actually insane to ban "modest" swimwear. are fat people no longer allowed to swim in t-shirts?

They specifically are banning muslim swimwear
