I don't know much of rustin chole other than the fact that he smokes cigarettes. There is no profound meaning behind Rustin Cohle, no ideology - he's just like you and me an honest working man.
He wanted beers and cigarettes. When Rust was undercover as a drug dealer he was a drug dealer. That's as meaningful as the character had gotten. "We are the masks we wear".
I don't know anything about Rustin cohle othen than the facts of the matter, he is not a pessimist or a nihilist - Rustin cohle knows about himself as much as I do. I would not watch True Detective Season 1 again, but I would say that Rustin Cohle's lifestyle is resonant but not in any specific direction. It's a person of interest but not a position of much.

see, the american would say "rust cohle" pointing out that the "stars are winning" is indicative of some character transformation, but the correct answer is actually that it's a simple inversion of the characters personalities: marty (the "optimist" "normie" foil to rust) expounds the edgy, and rust responsd...
of note: marty says this after seeing his estranged family after what is years(?) of seperation, which is mirrored in Rust having an out-of-body experience with his dead family...
both men, who are the mirror of pessismism/optimisim, ultimately have their lives (primarily, their family) destroyed and through the relentless pursuit of work are given some glimpse of redemption; the reader should not come to believe the marty will reconcile with his wife/daughters, for rust will never have his.
why do I have marty as my avatar? despite being every bit rust cohle --- it's because they're the same man...
to say that rust cohle isn't a pessimist -- if you weren't wacked out on american analysis, you'd realize it's the entire point of the show... they are foils... they have the same lives.... it's the entire reason why the inversion at the end is so effective....
