its' very simple: if rust was mistaken about himself the whole time -- what is the develoopment of marty? what change is there?
there's none.. the entire viewpoint is just ■■■■■■■■ americanism....
it's like pierre and natasha within war and peace: they're nearly the same character -- they are itnensely naive -- pierre's first marriage is to a whore (he is smitten by his naivety), natasha's elopement to bolkonski renders her the whore (smitten by kuragin due to their naivety) -- both have near death experiences (largeley frm their own stupidity) (pierres actions during the sack of moscow??, natasha's suicide) -- they end up together.
the only differnece is that pierre's naivety to some degree leads him to the morally good and natasha's to dumb woman look-at-me narcissist shit, which is truly just the bifuracation of the sexes. it is the inversion of the moral good/bad across the sex line.
now you want a good character? try prince andrei bolkonski -- what a likable fellow
have you read animal farm
who would guess that sonya rostov -- who sacrifices herself like andrei bolkonski -- is incredibly likeable aswell.
i truly pity those of you who don't have a forum foil: you are doomed to obscurity .

the entire point of the show is that they're thes ame guy -- they even destroy their relationship by the same sin: lust -- it's the whole point of the show -- the duality of optimism/pessismism in their characters......... accentuated by being the same guy...
