dont go to a new place like that already believing everything is so different and exotic. you will just spend time justifying that preconceived notion instead of getting a grasp of the way things really are. that's my advice. I think this is how you avoid becoming that guy that thinks everything is different, special, and mysterious. Like I had this Australian woman tell me about the special Japanese tradition of bring back gifts from where you came from, calling it by the Japanese name omiyage. lol I think you're just projecting your dislike of these people I agree that they're weird and I think my friend would too. I guess I can't blame you for coming to conclusions like that when I say they're a weeb, but they're well put together and not romantic in that sense about the culture or language lol. He's lived in Japan for a year some years prior and wouldn't do anything too cringey
basically I would only ask you to give the guy feedback and guidance on mastering the language if I thought it was a good fit and that he would benefit massively. I know plenty of japanese learning people I don't throw your way for this reason lol
It's no pressing matter though at the moment he is still doing east asian studies or something in the UK

it's odd how prevalent this is especially in people that arrive via anime
i went to a party a long time ago in Japan with this guy that used to wear these ridiculous naruto contact lenses in public and i'm chatting with a couple girls there, and he goes headfirst straight into the anime shit as one does when meeting people for the first time and they didn't know what the fuck he was talking about lol
