How about something like giving everyone abilities.
Town players want to play a game with a power which draws engagement moreso than being a VT.
Choose one per game:
-Duel - You and another player agree to enter sudden death voting and no votes can be made on any players other than the 2 for the day and no other duels can be accepted between players.
-Gank - You and another player agree to kill a player during the day
-Swap- You may switch your place with another player either during the day or night for if/when an action is targeted at you.
SWAP does not work for lynch.
When actions are resolved they are resolved in a stack. So Player A+B can target an action to kill at Player C who has a chance to respond.
Valid responses would be swap, or Gank with another player, then that player must respond if they accept or reject and if they reject then no further actions are taken and the stack resolves in reverse order.
ADHD garbage. Vanilla town is the best and most enjoyable role as a town player.
OK if you sign up you can be a VT and everyone else gets powers.

If you distribute unique roles to VTs it allows them to claim and clear themselves (in an open setup). If you give VTs nonunique actions that others donāt have, they can use it to clear themselves. If you give everyone a nonunique role that requires some amount of execution it detracts from the actual game of mafia that is scum hunting and role reading and adds complexity to some that donāt want it.
But yes roles that encourage discussion are good. It just needs to be counterbalanced by some people having nothing but a vote

We don't need to stick to scum hunting mafia as the only mafia that ever gets played, at least for me I'm OK with setups that end up making the roles play a larger part. Consider the suggestion as a type of 'daily run' as a variant on the standard play.
If we're saying the roles can make the game too convoluted, I could argue anything outside of the cop/nurse mafia is sacrilege, like a mafia evangelist
