Well when you attach something or a belief to your personality it becomes a lot easier to navigate the mental gymnastics to clear the cognitive dissonance bar so to speak. You get to just disregard any dissenting evidence, cling to even the weakest supporting evidence and out of the deal get weird self superiority over any "sheeple" who don't see what they do. Basically when pushed on it they just end up doubling down and digging themselves deeper, interesting stuff.

To add to what i was rambling about, you can't use logic to get a person out of something that logic didn't get them into. It's more similar to a faith or feeling they have rather than something concrete. It is why it's so dangerous that distrust in the press is so high among those that lean right. The press is still the best tool against corruption we have, but if you are conditioned to distrust it you will be left only with trump's word and he says it's good. Basically they live in a perpetual opposite day (if the press says it's good, it must be bad etc), and then it doesn't matter how much he contradicts himself they will pick and choose whatever is the most mentally convient reality for them to live in. It's not a new conservative strategy but it's certainly amped up and they have weaponized conspiracy theory subcultures on the way. An easy example is "tough on crime" type campaigns which regardless of crime stats can run entirely off the "feeling/fear" crime is high.
