After spending like 2 weeks in Japan I can definitely see how they were flying planes into boats they just have that type of culture there
Kamikaze samurai culture. They line up to get on the escalator dude
I've heard of that book I think. I would like to get around to reading it especially since I see lingering elements of military culture in schools here all the time.
If I had to summarize I would say
There is this erotic fascination with death and war at a cultural level that makes you feel this can't be cured without a complete reformation of society
And it's very easy to sit here and say the atom bomb was undisputably an act of evil (which is what I would believe/do believe) but these sort of things make me question/consider the nuance of my beliefs
Atom bomb wasn’t that bad
Actually it was an act of pure evil lol
Fire bombing arguably worse and killed more people
I guess the question comes to was it "necessary evil"
What is "necessary evil"
And who gets to decide
this is only true in the touristy places btw. Down here people be double fisting escalator rails and just not giving a fuck about a line especially in convenience stores.
Yes fire bombing is also an act of evil
Read Slaughterhouse 5 yns
It’s part of why you pay taxes
Total war scenario against two industrialized countries where every aspect of life and the economy for both countries revolved around the war effort and all civilian resources were being used for the war effort. Everyone is a target in those scenarios and the war was being fought for unconditional surrender
In Kyoto escalator culture was alot more relaxed so I think this was more of a Tokyo thing where the subways have a ton of fuckin people in them
I think that you should not try to convince yourself of reasons to commit an evil act
We can understand the necessity of "necessary evil" and not dispute it but what I am saying is also understand the evil and don't dispute it
The real question of the atomic bomb was about the conditions the allies gave to Japan, and how the US insisted on not allowing the emperor to remain but Britain and France thought we should. That condition left Hirohito waiting and unwilling to commit with his cabinet to a surrender. So America decided it had to he the bomb. When it didn't. We could have given the British and French terms and they would have surrendered before any further escalation was needed
Essentially: Fine you can reinforce the "necessary" of "necessary evil" but never erase the "evil"
There were probably some in the US who wanted to test/show the bomb
This is what I mean about calling evil what it is
I dispute it being classified as evil at all when it’s just the nature of war. Especially a full on hardcore war like WW2. If we dropped a nuke on Iraq in 2003 that would be evil but Japan in 1945 naw they deserved it
It's always evil to annihilate people I think
Then you just have to come down to - well it's war, one way is better than another, whatever
But remember it's evil or you lose your humanity. Like the (insert your preferred opposed group here - imperial japanese, israelis, palestinians, south african white genocide etc)
