I would never expect a business to hire a person who just does one thing that occupies 10% of an hour
and yet it used to be like that because that 15 was 8 dollars so you could divide the work load into 2 peeps.
If the minimum wage were to go back down to $8 in NYC right now, do you think restaurants would double their employee count, or do you think it would stay closer so the same?
Remember, employees also have training costs associated with him. Turnover is a big expenditure for a business. There are also other small things such as employee discounts to factor in, and as you said, businesses are smart.
Most people wouldnt work for 8 dollars now, everything is too expensive, minimum wge is just a bandaid on a bleeding impossible to cure wound of inflation and robbed wealth. I'm indifferent toward it.
But if it went back to 8 we might see some fast food owrkers pick up other skills for more pay rather than be content filling cups all day for 8. I would expect them to higher double peeps if it went back to 8 assuming everyone was just suddenly ok with the paycut.
How sick would it be if big companies and multimillionaires were taxed a bit more and we used that money to subsidize the construction of new homes and apartment buildings to increase the supply and lower the cost
Provide incentives to keep older properties in good shape, especially in ghettoized areas
You don't need dominos register clerks or delivery workers for "society"'s contiuned existence
You don't need Amazon for societies continued existence.
