I think the answer is fairly simple. Jones, like the rest of us, has somehow become an almost-normal person over the years of roleplaying on the internet. You know this. You know his threat is not an actual threat. Maybe you felt it back then, too.
You just didn't like the way he was talking to you. You don't like being threatened and brought it to the moderators to tell him not to do that. But I didn't respond that way because I feel when people are PMing each other, they are consenting to that interaction. And I understood why he acted that way (because he thought you threatened him first - it was a misunderstanding).
But in the interest of smoothing things over, I will say:
