in all of the cities i've lived in the existence of china or asiatown originally had little to nothing to do with the personal preferences of the residents beyond their choice to immigrate to the country
even without doing any research can you really not imagine a long list of reasons why people may end up in racially and ethnically segregated communities within cities that aren't really by choice during different eras of history
