The Intellectual Yet Idiot is a production of modernity hence has been accelerating since the mid twentieth century, to reach its local supremum today, along with the broad category of people without skin-in-the-game who have been invading many walks of life. Why? Simply, in most countries, the governmentâs role is between five and ten times what it was a century ago (expressed in percentage of GDP). The IYI seems ubiquitous in our lives but is still a small minority and is rarely seen outside specialized outlets, think tanks, the media, and universities â most people have proper jobs and there are not many openings for the IYI.

i think taleb is right about statistics but is somewhat misinterpreting what pinker claims. pinker does not claim (to my knowledge) that statistics indicate there will not be another world war. taleb is into the black swan thing so it is fair to say that we should seriously consider the probability of another world war happening into the death rate. but pinker's general claim that many other aspects have gotten better since WWII is legit (as a refutation to people who complain the world is so much more dangerous and violent these days than before).
i dont know about the probability of another war and the existential threat of nukes in the current day. its worth worrying about i guess.
