That's what I am saying. It's a false dichotomy. You have to include my post also

Classic alightsoul. Always butting in

I appreciate your opinion, but disagree. I'm not a huge fan of fun games.

All of my fun derives from sadism and masochistic power play

fun :face_vomiting:

Not at all surprising to hear from the person who made "The Elden Scrolls" - a game that spawned entire communities around discussion & analysis of "lore/backstory" (read: not fun to play)

Basically, the more time people spend discussing a game, the more obvious it is they feel some need to retroactively justify the massive amount of time they wasted playing (or in Matthew's case, making) it.

The perfect game would have no discussion at all because all its players would simply be in-game, playing it. (Sadly this has never yet happened but I am describing the ideal here.)

I only truly started to understand games when I stopped listening to the opinions of others & started asking myself: Am I having fun?

No? I'm not having fun? So then why does it matter that the music is "Award Winning?" (Hollow Knight is a bad game.) Why does it matter that the game is impeccably designed, hand-crafted, all of its enemies are drawn on a piece of paper and printed on your computer screen? (Cup Head is a bad game.) Why does it matter that reddit users are creaming their pants at the mere mention of it, there's a documentary where you get to see the emotional impact of the game's development & eventual release on its creators, you've "known" the developers since their first big hit? (Hades is a bad game.) All of these things are gimmicks, crutches, to distract you from the fact the game is a total waste of time. It isn't fun. Most of the time you'd be better off getting a job, getting some real sense of progression in your life, learning a skill, dancing with girls, fucking and fighting, walking in the rain and mud without shoes, attending the BSO or the Met, trying to befriend random cats in the street. You can pet the dog in this new game? Guess what - you can pet the dogs in real life. And they have perfect hair physics. You can customize your IRL player model and make it not fat the way you've been doing for your in-game player characters for 20 years. You can wear funny hats. And all of it is more fun because you are interacting with real people face-to-face while doing it and this is what makes life worth living.

I hope that makes sense to you guys. Just keep in mind that when ■■■ makes me moderator next week it will be illegal to respond without reading a full post in its entirety

YOU: thoroughly refuted 21st century "individualism"/"subjectivity", early 2000s "The Government should have no say in what goes on in my bedroom!", Fukayama historicism, the music video for Bon Jovi's It's my Life, "rights" to freely available birth control and abortion.

ME: the programmer as an ascendant demiurge, hatred of subhumans influenced by an amalgamation of hyperracism/Cain and Abel, unabomber personality flaws/severe "autism", midwittery, affinity to domestic terrorism, pushing the boundaries of acceptable discourse and thought: ■■■■■■. recognizing Jesus as my personal lord and savior.

Jesus spoketh untoeth err flock: "Get a job, preferably one that has you interact with Cloudflare Workers or AWS Lambda. If you don't have multiple Indian coworkers, you need to keep looking".

21 After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus' side,[a] 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus[b] of whom he was speaking. 25 So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is he that changes the story requirements in the middle of the sprint".

Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to the Project Manager what is Project Manager’s and to the DevSecOps what is DevSecOps’s.” And they were amazed at him.
