Had a look and I think it’s pretty good but would make a couple improvements
I will write something but I wish people would have followed through on that thing I asked:
Any way you can think of to ruin or grief games post it as reply to this post
-messaging people out of game
-posting role PM
-signing up on multiple accounts
My goal is to have really clear and concise rules that lay out what is not allowed and then to list out punishments for violations of those rules so that they will be enforced
What happens right now is moderators write “No discussing game outside of game thread” and things like that into a big document and then something actually happens and it becomes a big discussion about whether a rule was broken, what should happen, whether we even need rules; meanwhile no action is taken from the moderator end and the person returns to playing normally a game or two later.
What i’d like to do is lay out really simple rules for people to look at if they’re just starting, as you’ve done here, then create a document of specific violations, whether or not they are rulebreaking, what the action against hte player will be, and create a process for delivering on that action.
Failing this, your ruleset will degrade into what it was on the old site: disrespected, arbitrarily enforced, and often not even relevant to the player base as it contained things like “No Colored Texts.”
Every time you make a rule ask yourself if you are willing to enforce that rule and what you are willing to do to enforce it. Are you willing to moderator action a player refusing to follow guidelines on colored text? Probably not. Do you want to receive PMs that say “DotaKyle is posting in colored text in the game thread - can you ban?”
We should lay out rules that actually matter enough to be enforced and then enforce those. And we may find the ones that people actually care about enforcing are far fewer than what we had before. Just core anti-ruining and if that gets enforced then it’s already a huge step forward.
How serious is this?
Hi tucker they’re moderately serious and it’s really fun
Of the top my head I agree with this.
Things like color or bold I’m not going to ban for, but it’s something that people should just do. It makes the thread cleaner and easier to read and moderate.
As far as breaking the first thing that really came to my head would be player host interaction in a thread. I think there should be no direct interaction. No player should talk about any pm or info he or she got from the host. Maybe it’s not game breaking but that should not be used as any type of proof or evidence of town/scum.
The only one who should post a pm or about a pm should be the host in.
Maybe like a player expected behaviour list or something?
I agree with the host/player interaction stuff but what would be the solution to the situation that arises often where the players are arguing about a mechanic and start Privvate Messaging and @mentioning the host in the thread?
Host shouldn’t explain it to only that one player who PM’s imo, and if the host posts the explanation in the thread, the player who asked him could just go “I asked that question” (or it could be implied that said player was the one who PM’d through their earlier posts).
In the past if the host feels the information should be shared or benefit everyone in a non breaking way he/she should pubcially state it anonymously.
Like I have received multiple inquieures. Yes monkd really is the innocent child.
Usually the host just answers any question he’s pmed in the thread instead of in the pm
So that everybody has the same info
Unfortunately sometimes it can be kind of game-y with people trying to ask a question that suggests something in the thread - or mafia asking a mafia-related question that the whole thread doesn’t need to see
I know hosts in the past have sometimes been really chummy in the mafia chat, even talked strategy with the mafia players which is pretty silly.
But maybe that’s an area where if people are having fun and the host is onboard with it we shouldn’t be regulating it. idrk
I’m probably guilty of being chummy as well. Sometimes it’s hard not to.
I was tossing the idea of rules (things we strictly enforce) and etiquette (things we expect)
Thoughts?
yeah sure
or like a player guide/host guide with suggestions, not rules, which will not be enforced but new players can read it to get a sense of what’s expected
Yeah that was what I was thinking. I do want to bring back the new player guide I wrote in nadota. Dunno if people actually used it tho lol.
Omg I like you’re profile pic
What do you mean?
It’s hard to explain but if you’ve ever visited any other Mafia sites you’d know what I mean. Ian has comparisons and he already answered so don’t worry.
Also hi guise I’m new lolmao is there like a New Player thread or somesuch?
From earlier posts I’m assuming no but scrolling the thread on phone is a hassle.
No you can just sign up and blow minds
Apologies on mobile
