The trick is you select auto join and then just spam the refresh button and youāll join as soon as someone leaves, usually doesnāt take that long but if nobody is leaving and Iāve been spamming refresh for a minute Iāll take a break then try again later. Surprised u donāt know this trick itās worked since 2006

This is how people would get in ahead of you on the auto-join
If you were sitting in the title screen with server browse on auto-join, you could join sometimes and get instantly kicked with "server is full" message
That's cause some asshole was spam-clicking the join button and stole your spot
Solution: You have to spam-click the join button too

I didn't and don't think the auto join works on a queue system, I think it just automatically refreshes the server every so often, probably 5-10 secs or whatever it is, and if it notices and empty spot it tries to join. when you have multiple people doing it if their browser refreshes the server before yours they can join before you and you get the "server is full" message. Thats why I just spam refresh because it will just join as soon as someone leaves
