aoe 2 was the one he enjoyed most. rome total war as well.
rome total war has a similar game mode as civilization
i got aoe/rome/civ5
he used to send me videos all the time about rome total war and age of empires 2

aoe2 online is a bit harder to get together.
id suggest grabbing rome total war. its online mode is similar to civ
