Hostelworld has a lot of places for like 10-15 usd per night if you're looking for a budget, they're shared rooms so bring earplugs for the guys that snore, but I can vouch for hostels in Japan being

It'd depend on the condition of my apartment at the time. I literally have no beds lol I sleep on tatami mats.
It'd also probably cost you just as much to get to this area as it would for a decent hotel room in Tokyo or something. I don't even live on the same island as Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto etc.

well for what its worth the more rural and smaller parts of Japan are what i'm interested in the most
the idea of staying in one of those abandoned homes for a year and working on a novel while living with all the friendly (mostly elderly) locals could be really appealing to me
When I travel to places in Japan I just stay at manga cafes. It's like 3000 yen for a night usually. But I can sleep anywhere and I sleep deep enough to not be bothered by the sounds of people moving around outside.
Well if you don't mind sleeping on hardwood and I have nothing going on, I guess you can try. I'd advise against coming out here to do that though.

I slept on the floor in America too. Tatami is much more comfortable than carpet.
I'm going to Taiwan on Friday for my honeymoon. I'll be there two weeks.
