Appliances are far more pervasive than they were 50 years ago. There's a quality argument you could make here: if firms were capable of manufacturing these things, they would have -- these things saturated the entire market. One could interpret this as either a) those firms that did were capable of producing them with the required quality -- ergo appliances were better as a whole; b) the existence of vastly more firms today indicates that the capability to manufacture with quality at scale rose substantially.
People used to use cloth diapers instead of disposable ones. Are disposable diapers of higher quality than the cloth ones? I think that would be a good argument here: a shift of appliances to being a class of disposable.
What's your crowning intellectual achievement?
Per the thread topic, I'm going to go to the ballet more in 2026. ![]()
Big asses biggest fan
My favourite media is Sci fi/lore and its overlap with reality. I don’t really think anything else comes close, but it’s so complex that it invariably can (should) be adjusted to include geopolitical landscapes (past and present) as well as any cool modern science or technological advances.
So naturally I could talk about stranger things for literal hours.![]()
Is stranger things your favorite sci fi media? Mine is Alien, I could talk about alien for hours and how influential it is and how much care went into the designs of the xenomorph and the facehuggers and the at the time very groundbreaking feminist themes
it happens to be my most favourite, currently, because of its format and some of the core themes (aka simple friendship and “do good”ness, and nerdy gaming stuff) but for me it’s the premise in general: life itself, life that’s bigger than us, how we fit in the universe, what consciousness is, how we evolve, how we imagine it→ how our imagination is either informed by real things/events/places or the potential that we inform a “sense” of the future or reality through our conscious imagination. these things are just super fascinating and the implications for reality or our understanding of it are pretty staggering.
yeah, it’s an incredible piece. somehow as a kid i was completely terrified of it, but still somehow intuited some important things that i think they were going for (like the feminist aspects and also the strength of something human, but also this dual reality that life can be other than human and not evil even if opposed or appearing to be nightmareish). just a lot to chew on, subconsciously as a smol brain smol child
I suck at picking favorites, music as a whole probably wins out but...
I do really like mob psycho 100 (season 2 is my fav). Other anime I fw bebop, space dandy, 98 berserk, yyh, hxh. Berserk, csm and hxh only manga I've read. I remember liking fringe when it was on as like an xfiles spiritual successor but jj abrams can't end a show lotta lens flare. Big Lebowski is a good film but some people probably like it too much. Most game stories I don't get into but I remember liking psychonauts 1/2.
Oh frieren is good too about to start back up, nyte you'd probably like it, it's been a while but you'd probably like most of fringe too cause sci fi.
The jokes write themselves
Pretty good taste actually, chainsaw man is my favorite anime of all time and berserk is also WAYYY up there for me, im also pretty into hxh and I also really enjoyed mob psycho
