i saw u make the cookie clicker comparison before. it’s more nuanced than that LoL

Well then you havent examined it hard enough

Dude This Game Is Not An Incremental Game

The idea and metaphorical concept of cookie clicker is not related to its progression system or mechanics - it’s meant to describe a game that fundamentally ; when stripped down to its core, does not differ from just clicking the cookie when it pops up on the screen.

You press some buttons for 40 minutes - at the objectively right times of course (there’s only 1 right move) - and then you either win or you lose.

Dota - like most other games these days - is run by psychologists; with the main focus of making you play more.

The analogy to cookie clicker is very clear. You are not actually doing anything when playing dota.
Speedrunning games depends on memorizing pressing all the right inputs at the right time, and so does dota. It’s the same thing forever.

The game loses its charm once you see everything.

i would argue that dota by definition is an short-lived incremental game

Yes I was going to say this too but decided against it. Don’t know why exactly I did but it’s certainly true to a point.

Cookie clickers are more akin to RPGs where you just grind all the time.

DotA has a grind system in place, too- but you actually improve. Everyone is granted the same opportunity at the outset of a game. Unlike WoW, where you need days of work, a few farming/grinding alts to get one character that’s good at any level

you’re probably thinking of an “idle game” but i dont think thats the comparison jacobs trying to make

And please don't say "Oh you actually haven't seen everything there's 12390571293068213095812093458425 hero combinations" - It's all the same

Please Do Not Include The Overwhelming Truth In Your Rebuttal Of My Argument

Yes the point is that it's not the truth. It's not going to make a difference when there's a witch doctor instead of the crystal maiden.
If you think different lineup combinations make the game more interesting you're lying to yourself, especially knowing how similarly every game plays.

You improve at what exactly? Improve at pressing the buttons at the right times? When was that a skill?

It might not matter as much in a 4k mmr bracket or a 4chan inhouse as it does in a pro match, no.

But the whole theorycrafting part of the game does make it a lot more fun and varied than something like talent tree RPGs where there’s a well defined optimal tree to do in the meta.

I think theory-crafting is as beneficial to the gameplay as cosmetics in my opinion.

You improve at positioning and game rhythm. There’s no actual marketable “skill” coming out of beating a videogame, unless you count some of the zachtronics games

Yes - I do agree that dota is a completely different game between matchmaking and competitive but even to the highest levels of matchmaking the game is still the same as 4k mmr. If you are not playing at the international you are playing cookie clicker.

They both get people to buy the product, so yeah.
