I think it only makes sense if you are an established brand selling a product already that can be easily marketed to 18-34 year old gamers in which case it just gets added to the marketing budget and you can reuse a lot of employees you already use for other marketing purposes

plus some of these dudes who are pulling in a couple thousand in views on twitch (or more) and have a social media influencer type brand just off their name alone are going to be asking for massive contracts just on that alone

it was really only a matter of time until someone like the saudi's stepped in to prop up the bubble. it really wasn't long ago when players were sleeping on floors with their pc's in backpacks between their matches because their orgs and the to's didn't have the cash to get hotels for everyone by the venue. TO's were rife with money laundering or prize pools disappearing (chinese teams originally thought the first TI was a scam).
Sponsorships obviously helped the teams afford basic gear and accommodations but the millionaire venture capitalists with cash to piss away on a fantasy esports team has always been the cocaine to the sponsorships coffee. Eventually that money dries up and you turn to the saudi's to support your lifestyles and events that exploded in value so quickly
RIOT chose to go completely internal and not rely on outside tournament organizers but that obviously creates it's own problems

enough viewers of tournies , enough fans of players, who buy shit the sponsors push
its not all fronted by the org, sponsors contribute to these costs
they get better sponsorship deals than any of these t1 teams for sure tho
I've just heard it's hell for the talent as riot will purposefully break up casting duos so they ensure they have less gravitas with the fan base than riot. control freak energy
