like wtf is the endgame. what scenario are high level military officials seeing in their heads to justify attacking china and the us
they didn’t want a full scale invasion of china, they expected just to have a hit and run type invasion like the first sino japanese war and get a good treaty after a show of overwhelming force.
they underestimated the stubbornness of the nationalist KMT government and got dragged into a much bigger war than they anticipated.
this failure to predict the reactions of other countries would be repeated during the attacks on hong kong/pearl harbor/etc.

also do note that china's entire history is just being unified over and over by some random chinese state or external force like the mongolians. all the alternative national governments have to go running around conquering everything too, so its not unreasonable for the japanese to try their hand at it.
i would expect the chinese became really racist against the japanese as a consequence of wwii but i am not sure about that.

but still, the first sino-japanese war ended with a heavily japanese favor (taking korea which was originally a chinese tributary)
